During the half term break, 40 students along with 5 staff travelled to the beautiful city of Freiburg in Black Forest, in the sunny southwest of Germany for a Languages Department educational visit. Freiburg is a wonderful old town with a large market square, an impressive cathedral and the little water channels called Bächle complete with the Freiburg plastic ducks! They had the opportunity to explore the farmer’s market and sample the delicious products such as the local strawberries and the variety of German sausages – Bratwurst and Currywurst were particularly popular! It was a great opportunity to experience life and culture in a different country, and for those pupils learning German it was an excellent chance to put their learning to good use.
Their itinerary included some of the famous sights in the area such as Triberg and its waterfall, Lake Titisee, where they hired pedalo boats and the village for an opportunity to sample Schwarzwälderkirschtorte, a trip in a cable car up Schauinsland, Freiburg’s local mountain from where they continued to the tower which they climbed for amazing views across to the Swiss Alps as well as fantastic views down to Freiburg. They also had the opportunity to travel by the local trams. Most of the last day was spent at the famous Europa Park, the largest theme park in Germany and the second largest in Europe and the day ended in the sunshine at the open air swimming pool.
