Outstanding Table Cricket Success

Our Table Cricket Team competed in the Lord’s Taverners National Table Cricket Finals at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on Friday, 7 June . What an amazing competition it was!

There were twelve teams in total from across the country divided into two pools. Our team played five teams in the opening round and beat each of them decisively either through a high batting score or strong fielding. They played against Denbigh High School (Luton), Maplewell Hall School (Loughborough), Thomas Wolsey School (Ipswich), Greenfield School (Merthyr Tydfill) and Valence School (Westerham, Kent).

Having topped their pool, our team earned a very well-deserved place in the final where they met the reigning champions, Ralph Thoresby School from Leeds. Everyone at the competition watched the final. There were Lord’s Taverners dignitaries sat down each side of the table and cameras everywhere. The two teams paraded on to music and a lot of cheering. William Howard batted first and scored more runs than they had in all their opening games. It was a great start for them. Then Ralph Thoresby came up to bat. The competition was fierce. William Howard fielded brilliantly but with one ball remaining in the final over the scores were equal. Ralph Thoresby’s final batter kept his head and scored two runs winning the match for his team.

The final match was very close, and our team were obviously a little disappointed not to have won but they were all able to appreciate that they had been incredibly successful. Second in the county is an amazing achievement.

All ten students played brilliantly. They are a team to be proud of.

Another student from WHS, Heathcliff Stone, was a further credit to the school assisting at the event as an umpire.

A massive well done to Oliver Wightman, Tom Armstrong, Josie Wright, Tom Harmer (Captain), Davonna Cowan (Vice-Captain), Libby Kavanagh, Connor Dixon, Thomas Threlkeld, Joshua Fleming and William Sewell and Heathcliff Stone (assistant umpire).
