Ten students from WHS competed in the Lord’s Taverners North East Regional Table Cricket Final at Durham Cricket Ground on Thursday, 2 May. Placed third at the County Competition earlier in the year, the students were aware that competition would be fierce and were advised to focus on enjoying themselves rather than winning.
The team rose to the occasion. In the first round they played three matches winning two convincingly and losing one by only three runs. As each team in their pool had won two matches and lost one, positions were decided based on the number of runs each team had lost by, so William Howard were placed first in their pool. This put them directly into the first/second place final.
In the final they met Trinity School. Trinity had won the Cumbria County Competition and understandably our team were nervous. Again though, they stepped up to the challenge. They played with focus and confidence and won the match, earning themselves a place in the National Final at Lord’s in June, for the second year running.
Cumbria secured all three podium positions in his Regional Final (1st – William Howard; 2nd – Trinity; and 3rd – Carlisle College); a great result for the county.
A huge well done to Tom Harmer (captain), Davonna Cowan (vice-captain), Oliver Wightman, Thomas Threlkeld, Connor Dixon, Joshua Fleming, Thomas Armstrong, Libby Kavanagh, William Sewell and Josie Wright. Well done also to Heathcliff Stone who assisted at the event as a scoring official.
