Commonwealth Day (12 March 2020)

William Howard School Tanzanian Link was founded in 1987, and this year, the 15th visit of students to Tanzania and the Uru/Moshi area takes place from Saturday, 4 – Friday, 24 July. The group of Sixth Form students and staff who are taking part in the visit have been busy fundraising with a wide range of events taking place. As Tanzania is part of the Commonwealth, we have chosen this day to develop whole school awareness of the link and fundraising for our 2020 projects. Our fundraising this year is for the Amani Street Children’s Home in Moshi.

We will spend 10 days working with the home to see the work of this charity and support the young people who are in its care. A combination of poverty, neglect and abuse, push children into the streets. Some lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. Too many children in Tanzania are forced to take care of themselves, homeless and alone, when they are as young as five years old. Amani gives kids their childhood back. Without Amani, homeless children are trapped in poverty and neglect. With the generosity of people around the world, though, they can be rescued, given loving care, and even grow up to attend university.

As part of our fundraising, we have an event on Thursday, 12 March which will include:

  • Pay £1.00 to wear a hoodie in place of your school blazer. Tokens need to be purchased from your Form Tutor prior to the event and checks of tokens will be made on the day.
  • Bake sale in the foyer at both breaks of homemade cakes for a donation.
  • Raffle – we have several lovely hampers and items for which tickets can be purchased prior to the day, or on the day itself.

We are very grateful for the support of the school community in this long standing link and would encourage your child to take part in the activities on the day.

Should you require further information on the link, please do not hesitate to contact me at school via email or Tel: 016977 45700.

Yours sincerely
