Year 8 geographers are investigating woodland ecosystems. Part of their study is to compare deciduous woodland with coniferous forests, outlining the key differences. Last week they used GIS (Geographic Information System) to map coniferous and deciduous woodland and today they headed outside to conduct some fieldwork in the woods adjacent to the school’s sports field. They measured the species diversity and temperature of the deciduous woodland and will later compare the data with that from a coniferous example. They also calculated the amount of carbon the trees store and will test which type of woodland is most effective in stalling climate change.
