The weather was perfect yesterday for the first Rounders games this year for our Year 8 and Year 10 teams at Caldew School.
Year 8 Match
The girls had only had one rounders practice since Easter so were not as ready as they would have liked but they had a fabulous game and played some brilliant rounders. Our Year 8 team played against Caldew Year 9s (Miss Carruthers strategically decided not to tell the team that they were playing an older year group, to avoid panic!).
The team went into bat first having won the toss. The first innings went well, some good batting and confidence moving onto second post saw us bank several half rounders. At the end of the first timed innings: WHS 5 – Caldew 5.
The second innings appeared to be going well, with some steady scoring and solid fielding but some errors in our fielding cost us. Final score: WHS 9.5 – Caldew 13.5.
Miss Carruthers said, “The team did a brilliant job against an older year group, with lots to take from the game. The girls should be pleased with their performance.”
Players – Georgina Beattie, Caitlin Graham, Jamie McAulay, Ellen Starkey, Maisy Waugh, Jessica Whiteford, Abbie Whiteford and Isla Wigham and Paloma O’Connor.
Year 10 Match
Considering the majority of the Year 10 team have not touched a rounders ball since last summer, we were a little unsure how this game was going to go.
Miss Carruthers commentated, “Again, we were in first to bat which is never easy – it’s always better knowing what the other team got so you know what you need to beat. I was umpiring the first innings of the Year 8 game, but I could hear the cheering on pitch 2 from the Year 10 team so I knew they had started well. As they changed over, Beth signalled a thumbs up, 11 rounders scored. A brilliant start! I think the girls surprised themselves.”
At the end of the first innings: WHS 11 – Caldew 8
During the second innings, the girls batted well. A special mention has to go to Connie Whiteford for her brilliant reverse hits, which caught the opposition off guard and bagged us 3 rounders. Our fielding was strong and some great communication led by Anna and Tallulah made it difficult for Caldew to score. One of Caldew’s strongest players was next to step up, she was a left-hand hitter and posed a threat. Our fielders responded to this and repositioned accordingly. The ball was hit well, it was a high ball but hit with power. Anna called out for the catch, tracked the ball well and what a catch it was – it was immense!
Final score: WHS 23.5 – Caldew 15
A brilliant first game and a strong start to the season.
Year 10 team – Hope O’Connor, Izzy Milligan, Connie Whiteford, Lydia Sabuda, Beth Johnston, Anna Canning, Zaara Nassif, Izzy Matthews and Tallulah Brough.
