Year 10 GSCE Food Preparation & Nutrition students are currently studying protein as part of their course. They have looked at the nutritional benefits of oily fish such as salmon and were therefore delighted to be chosen as one of 300 schools to receive free salmon as part of the Food Teachers Centre Fish Hero’s Programme.
In theory lessons, students have also researched sustainability in fishing so were particularly pleased that this was wild Alaskan salmon.
Mrs Mothersdale, Assistant Headteacher at William Howard School said, “For our practical lesson, we wanted to improve our skills of shallow frying, combining and shaping, so we chose to make salmon fishcakes. As fish is an expensive commodity, it is great that we are able to widen our students experience of trying different fish and considering different recipes to use it in.”
