The 16 to 19 Tuition Fund is ring fenced funding for schools, colleges and all other 16 to 19 providers to mitigate the disruption to learning arising from coronavirus (COVID-19). The funding is being provided to support small group tuition for 16 to 19 year old students in English, Maths, and other courses where learning has been disrupted. Although the actual tuition does not need to be for GCSE English or Maths, the students supported all need to be those who had not achieved grade 5 or above in at least one of those subjects at this level by age 16. All supported students must be on a 16 to 19 study programme.
Providers should prioritise support for students who have not achieved a grade 4 in English and/or Maths. Providers have flexibility to decide the most appropriate approach to resourcing the delivery of small group tuition supported through the fund. This may include a mix of both teaching and learning support staff as appropriate.
The purpose of this statement is to set out how William Howard School is planning to utilise its 16 to 19 tuition fund allocation to support students who may have had their learning disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The targeted and strategic use of this fund will reflect our ethos and mission, in putting learners first and focusing on ‘be the best you can be’.
How is William Howard School using this fund?
Tuition groups will comprise small groups of students and the tuition sessions were be scheduled in addition to the planned programme of study hours already timetabled for the academic year 2023/2024. Tuition sessions will be delivered face to face, online or through a blended delivery model.
Examples of some of the Tuition Support on offer include:
- Maths and English topic support
- Academic skills support and development
- Technical Knowledge and skills support to aid mastery and make up for any shortfall from previous learning
- Specialist Support to improve engagement for learners with SEND
Tuition Support offered will be based on an individual need’s assessment, the identification of an individual starting point, clear learning goals, expectations and outcomes.
Implementation
We will use the funding as follows:
- Recruiting a number of staff to work with students in small groups to support teaching and learning
- Increasing the hours of some existing staff
- Run 1 to 1 or small group sessions in addition to the existing timetabled hours
- Support will be offered and provided based on the individual needs of each student

Review of 2022-2023 funding allocation
Funding prioritised students who had not achieved a 4 in English and Maths. Online tuition including package support from PIXL and Mathswatch was used with individual students for the full academic year, and face to face tuition took place when physically in school. Face to face tuition was carried out by school teaching staff.
All students in Year 13 who undertook additional tuition in 2022-2023 achieved at least a grade 4 in Maths or English following use of the tuition fund. There are some students from Year 12 who did not and are continuing with tuition this year.
