Two of our students, Abbie and Olivia McPherson, have won their age group category in the national Tunnock’s Teacake competition, which they entered in June.
The food styling competition challenged entrants to produce a stunning plate with a focus on the presentation of a Teacake. The overall theme was ‘Seasons’. Entries were judged on creativity, presentation, skills and adding nutritional balance.
Abbie and Olivia’s plate was inspired by the berries and mushrooms they see on autumnal walks around Cumbria. They dusted the teacake with cocoa powder to create a realistic textural look of a mushroom, and roughly scored the buttercream of the mushroom’s stalk. This was surrounded by a homemade sweet berry compote which complemented the shortbread crumbs added for textural impact. Finally, the plate was finished off with a feathered white chocolate design to give a frosty autumnal feel.
The girls were presented with their certificates and prizes today by Mrs McKenna.
