Three Year 10 girls, Maddison Grierson, Anna Canning and Libby Bowness have a big day ahead of them on Sunday 17th December. They are members of the Annan Rugby U16 Hornets Team and will be facing their Dumfries Saints equivalents at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, for the Girls U16 National Cup and Shield.
Maddison said, “We’re in with a good chance of winning so long as we stay positive.”
Maddison has been playing rugby at Annan since she was in Year 5, where her brother also played. She later recruited friends, Anna and Libby, when they were in Year 7 at William Howard School.
Anna commented, “Until you try a sport, you don’t know if you’ll like it. I’d encourage anyone to give something a go.” Libby added, “We now have friends all over South-West Scotland.”
The girls usually train every Wednesday evening and play matches on Sundays. Recently they have upped their training to include Thursday evenings too.
They certainly aren’t perturbed by inclement weather or sliding over a soggy pitch. In fact, they joked, “Sometimes you can’t see the yellow of our strips because they are so coated in mud!”
Well done girls and very best luck for the match – William Howard will be cheering you on!
