Our Table Cricket Team headed to Durham Cricket Ground on Monday for the Lord’s Taverners North-East Regional Table Cricket Finals and the chance to win a place in the National Finals at Lord’s.
There were eight teams competing from across Cumbria, Northumberland and County Durham, split into two pools. Our team began well winning their first two matches, demonstrating excellent batting, bowling and fielding skills, and great teamwork. In their third and final pool match, they met Cartmel. Cartmel had also won their first two matches so this game would decide who topped the pool. It was a close-fought match, but Cartmel narrowly took the win.
Having come second in their pool, WHS had one final match against the team who was second in the other pool – a playoff for third or fourth place. Here they met Central Academy. They played well but again lost narrowly and so placed fourth in the competition.
The team were disappointed as they really hoped that they would have the chance to head to Lord’s again, but they hid their disappointment well and congratulated the competition winners, Cartmel, with huge applause when they went up to receive the trophy.
A special acclaim must go to Nicky Errington, our team captain. At the end of the competition, he was presented with the ‘Spirit of Cricket Award’ for the care he had shown to the members of his team. He was delighted. What a lovely way to finish his table cricket journey at William Howard!
Well done to all the members of the William Howard Team – Nicky (captain), Samuel (vice-captain), Eve, Summer, Harry, Levi, Emily, Amy and Lewis. They have all performed well throughout the table cricket competitions this year and have done the school proud.
Well done to all the teams who took part and made this a great day of table cricket. Thanks to the Sports Leaders from Central Academy for refereeing and to all those involved in the organisation of the day.
We look forward to taking part in the competitions next year!
