Our Alumna of the Month for April is Jazz Dunn. Jazz left WHS in 2015. She really enjoyed Drama and English at school but her favourite subject was always PE and the extra-curricular classes. She recalls how teachers such as Miss Lamb and Mr Miller made it enjoyable and made her want to be a teacher. Her love for sport led Jazz to study a BTEC Level 3 in Sport and Exercise Science at Leeds College, and then a degree in Physical Education and Outdoor Education at the University of Worcester, with intentions to be a PE teacher.
While at university, Jazz joined a University Officers Training Corps to gain an insight into the army and benefit from the opportunities they offered. This ignited her interest in the military. After university, Jazz joined an army reserve unit (4 LANCS) based out of Carlisle and worked as a supply teacher in Cumbria to confirm if she wanted to qualify as a teacher. Although Jazz enjoyed teaching, she felt that a career in the regular army would suit her better so attended Officer Selection and on passing selection, began the Regular Commissioning Course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) soon after. Jazz commissioned in December 2023 and now works as an Education Officer in Catterick, delivering education and training to soldiers. Jazz gets to travel for work and is surrounded by likeminded people. She can regularly take part in sport, adventurous training, and military competitions as part of her job and remarked: “I’m loving it and hope to have a long career in the Army”.
Jazz says: “My advice to students now would be to always be yourself, do challenging things and have more conversations with different people. You never know what you might learn from someone, and connections are the best things you can make in life.”
