Kaya Farrugia-Palmer is our featured alumna this month. Kaya left WHS in 2018, after completing her A Levels, and during her time here, she particularly enjoyed English Literature, finding the lessons fascinating and inspiring. She was fully engrossed in the creative subjects, including Art, Performing Arts, Music and Drama, and she made the most of every opportunity that came her way.
Kaya made lifelong friends and was also a keen sportswoman, competing in hockey tournaments and athletic events. One of her most memorable experiences was travelling to Taiwan, where she represented England at a national conference—an eye-opening opportunity she has always treasured. She went on many theatre trips with the Performing Arts department, with standout moments including visits to the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester and Musical Theatre workshops in London, both of which fuelled her passion for the stage. Another highlight for her was forming a band for her Music BTEC course and performing at the Old Fire Station as part of a module.
After leaving school, Kaya took a gap year before beginning a Foundation course in Musical Theatre at Read College in Reading. She then completed a one-year full-time Core Diploma in Musical Theatre at Associated Studios in London. Although she gained agent representation during this time, the impact of national lockdowns meant much of her practical training was disrupted, leading her to seek further development. Kaya went on to study at the prestigious Urdang Academy, graduating with a First Class BA (Hons) in Professional Dance and Musical Theatre.
Kaya is now a professional performer. She recently completed the UK & Ireland tour of Kinky Boots and is soon to embark on the upcoming European tour.
She said that the greatest joy in her career comes from connecting with people from all backgrounds—sharing stories, challenging beliefs, and encouraging audiences to reflect on the world around them. She believes in the power of theatre to change minds, provoke emotion, and offer an escape from everyday life.
Kaya’s message to current students is to dream big and believe in themselves. She encourages young people not to listen to negative voices that create limits but to focus on solutions and opportunities. She emphasises the importance of making connections and building a strong support network, as these relationships provide the foundation for future success.
Her final words of advice: “You are capable of whatever you set your mind to”.
