This week is Armed Forces Week, culminating with celebrations across the country on Saturday’s Armed Forces Day. The day originated as a chance for the public to show their support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving personnel to Service families, veterans and cadets.
WHS is the catchment school for the local RAF base, so our Forces Family Liaison Officer, Mrs McGaffin, organised activities in school to raise awareness and celebrate the connection.
A hands-on display in the foyer gave information about local RAF Spadeadam and promoted the different cadet forces. As well as some military artifacts, there were uniforms for students and staff to try on. Thank you to Tom Day and Callum Hughes for helping on the stand.
Our Sixth Form cadets also ran some command/team building activities, including a cone minefield, stretcher improvisation, and gas attack races. The students had to work as a team but also think outside the box. They showed great resilience and leadership skills.
A competition to design a medal was held for all students and the entries will be judged by Callum and Tom.
