Early on Monday 28th April, 26 excited Year 10 and Year 12 students set off on their Outward Bound adventure to Ogwen Cottage in stunning Eryri (Snowdonia), Wales.
Spirits were high as they embarked on the journey, and after a smooth and easy trip, they arrived ready to begin an action-packed programme.
Wasting no time, the group kicked off the experience with a ‘jog and dip’ — a thrilling plunge into a waterfall! As part of the tradition, everyone linked arms to complete the “Ring of Steel,” going fully underwater together — a real test of bravery and teamwork that set the tone for the days ahead.
After drying off and warming up, students gathered to plan the next day’s activities, focusing on Leadership and pushing themselves out of their comfort zone. Some setting off on an overnight hike and camp, while others take on exciting challenges like canoeing and climbing. It’s shaping up to be an unforgettable week of adventure, resilience, and teamwork.
The evening ended with a hearty meal back at the centre, followed by games to wind down. A fiercely competitive round of Uno provided plenty of laughs, with Mr Mallinson ultimately claiming the victory!
Day 2: Challenge, Courage, and Character
After a great first day settling into the stunning surroundings of Snowdonia, Day 2 brought even more adventure and excitement for our Year 10 and 12 students.
The energy was high as two of the groups took on a full day of adrenaline-pumping activities—rock climbing, abseiling, and canoeing. Whether it was scaling natural rock faces, descending sheer drops with control and confidence, or navigating the still waters in tandem canoes, each challenge tested resilience, teamwork, and trust. The encouragement between students was inspiring, and it was fantastic to see everyone push beyond their comfort zones.
Meanwhile, the third group embarked on a different kind of adventure—their overnight expedition. With rucksacks packed and spirits high, they set off into the hills, navigating their way through wild terrain and learning vital expedition skills. Leadership came naturally to many as roles were shared and rotated—from map reading and pacing to cooking and campcraft. Tonight, they’ll be wild camping under the stars—a true test of independence and teamwork.
Throughout the day, the theme of character development shone through. Whether supporting each other on the rock face, paddling in sync on the lake, or leading the way on the trail, our students rose to every challenge with maturity, determination, and a sense of fun.
Days 3 & 4 – Grit, Growth, and Glorious Views
As the sun rose over the rugged landscape of North Wales, so began one of the most challenging and rewarding parts of our adventure – the overnight expedition. Over the last two days, every student has pushed themselves to new heights, quite literally, as they took on the physical and mental demands of an unforgettable mountain experience.
Split into three groups, students embarked on three distinct and demanding journeys: some battled the elevation and heat on the ascent of Mount Snowdon, others tackled the three peaks of the local mountain ranges, while the final group trekked their way to camp beside Llyn Llyffant – the highest lake in Wales. Whichever route they took, the common thread running through every expedition was resilience.
These past two days were about far more than just climbing mountains. Students worked as teams to pitch tents, cook meals, navigate paths, and encourage one another through steep climbs and tired legs. The weather added its own challenges, with bursts of sunshine making for stunning views but also draining climbs, testing hydration and stamina throughout.
But what truly stood out was the way our students leaned into the challenge. There were moments of fatigue, of sore feet and aching backs, but also of laughter, songs on the trail, and shared moments of triumph. Leadership was on full display as students supported each other, made decisions together, and found strength not just in themselves, but in their teams.
Evenings at camp were moments to reflect, rest, and recharge under the stars – a well-earned reward after long hours on the move. By the time each group returned to Ogwen Cottage, the sense of accomplishment was clear on every face. Tired, yes – but proud. They had not only taken on the elements but also tested and grown their own limits.
These experiences will stay with them far beyond the trip: not just the breathtaking landscapes, but the deeper confidence that comes from facing something tough and getting through it together.
