Students in the Year 9 German Character Curriculum class with Mrs Terry have spent several weeks building up to running a full café scenario enacted entirely in German.
Students learned German vocabulary linked to food, drink and cafés. They created their own menus for a pancake house in Germany. Students carefully thought through what language they would exchange with staff in a café, from entering, through ordering, paying and finally saying goodbye. They crafted a script and translated it into German, practising perfect pronunciation.
Finally, they were ready for their teaching room to be transformed into a café! Students placed and received orders from the menu and chefs made up plates of pancakes which were served with drinks. Every pupil performed each role, all in German.
The students have had a little taste of working as a team in a café and have come away with valuable German language which they will be able to rely on if they visit a real German café in the future.
Mrs Terry said: “This lesson was testament to the wonderful work ethic and enthusiasm which the class have demonstrated throughout the year. Their next challenge is to repeat the exercise…this time, in Dutch!”
