This year, our Year 9 students embarked on an incredible journey as part of their Character Curriculum option, Outdoor Learning. Throughout the year, they immersed themselves in various outdoor activities, learning essential skills and engaging in hands-on projects that included creating their own outdoor equipment and developing conservation areas on the school grounds. These experiences culminated in an exciting practice expedition in the Lake District, all in preparation for their Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Setting Off: Keswick to Stonethwaite
The expedition began with the students being dropped off in Keswick. Equipped with maps, compasses, and their well-prepared rucksacks, the students were tasked with navigating their way to the Stonethwaite campsite. The journey tested their newly acquired navigation skills and teamwork as they traversed through stunning landscapes and challenging terrains.
On reaching Stonethwaite, the students demonstrated their proficiency in setting up tents and preparing their evening meals. As night fell, the tired but accomplished group settled down to rest, the weight of their heavy packs finally lifted from their shoulders.
A New Day: From Stonethwaite to Derwentwater
The following morning greeted the students with sunshine, lifting their spirits for the day ahead. They expertly cooked breakfast, a testament to the outdoor cooking skills they had honed over the year, and efficiently packed their rucksacks, ready for the day’s journey.
Their return route took them along the opposite side of Derwentwater, offering a new set of navigational challenges and picturesque views. The students faced the day with resilience and determination, displaying the character and fortitude that had been cultivated through their Outdoor Learning curriculum.
Celebrating Success
The practice expedition was not just a test of the students’ outdoor skills but also a powerful character-building experience. Each student showed remarkable perseverance, teamwork, and independence, essential qualities for their upcoming Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Thank you to all the dedicated staff who generously gave their time and expertise to make this expedition possible. Their commitment to providing such life-enhancing opportunities is truly appreciated.
Congratulations to all the Year 9 students involved in this expedition. You have done yourselves proud and have laid a strong foundation for your future adventures and achievements in the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Well done!
It will be the turn of the other Outdoor Learning group this Friday who have a high standard to follow.
