Despite the wild weather, the WHS Mountain Runners, mainly made up this week of enthusiastic Year 7 students, completed a tough run up Talkin Fell. Undeterred by the elements, the group set off from the peaceful village of Talkin, quickly tackling the lung-busting climb to the flanks of the fell.
With rain clouds looming, the runners managed to dodge the worst of it, rewarded with a breathtaking view over the northern Lake District fells and the Solway Firth. However, the route wasn’t without its challenges, as the notorious boggy section lived up to its reputation, claiming a few running shoes along the way!
The excitement mounted as the group raced to the trig point, where they posed for the traditional team photo. After taking in the panoramic view, there was a quick discussion about wind chill and the importance of shelter, valuable lessons in outdoor running.
The final leg was a fast-paced descent back to the bus, marking the end of a fantastic 4-mile run with an elevation gain of over 900 feet. The resilience and determination of the runners shone through, despite the tough conditions.
Next week, the club heads over to Hadrian’s Wall for their next adventure!
