We were delighted to welcome guests today for the official unveiling of a fabulous new artwork in our reception area. It was an honour to have Julie Minns MP join us to cut the ribbon and reveal the piece.
The specially commissioned illustration features William Howard School nestled amongst beloved Brampton landmarks. Created by local artist Josephine Scales, with contributions from former WHS student Ruby Penkeyman, the playful design brings together hand drawn elements that were later digitally assembled into a colourful townscape.
Josephine has produced illustrations for magazines, BBC Bitesize, CBeebies, and National Museums Liverpool. Ruby worked with Josephine during her Year 11 work experience, and we are glad to she has continued along a creative path, now studying Art at Carlisle College.
Headteacher Ms Pigdon praised the piece, saying: “We are incredibly proud to unveil this wonderful new artwork at William Howard School. The artist has beautifully captured the vibrancy, warmth and strong sense of belonging that define our school and our wider community. Having one of our own students contribute makes this piece particularly special. We were also honoured to welcome and thank our MP, Julie Minns, for unveiling the artwork. This is a piece that truly reflects who we are, and we hope it will stand the test of time at the entrance to our school for many years to come.”
We made it a double celebration, calling upon Julie to also officially open our new ‘Safe Room’, a valuable addition to the Aspire facilities. WHS SENCo Miss Carruthers explained how the calm, welcoming space supports students experiencing difficulties, helping them self regulate before returning to class. Aspire teachers Mrs King and Mrs Sharp shared how transformative the room has already been for the students who use it.
Before the ceremonies, guests enjoyed delicious canapés freshly prepared that morning by our talented Year 9 students. Members of the Student Leadership Team served the refreshments, accompanied by beautiful piano performances from Sixth Formers Heilani and Helena.
It was an event that perfectly showcased the creativity, community spirit, and care that define William Howard School.
