We have some very keen and talented runners in WHS! On Saturday 8th February, three of our Year 9 students – Aoife, Elena and Elliot – represented Cumbria in the Northern Schools’ Inter-County Cross Country Championships in Middlesbrough, competing against runners from Northumberland, North Yorkshire, Cleveland and Durham.
Elliot came in 19th in the Junior Boys race out of 75 runners and was the 4th Cumbrian in. Aoife was 54th and Elena 58th in the Junior Girls race. A special mention goes to Aoife for showing great sportsmanship in encouraging her teammate during the race.
Amazingly, Aoife and Elliot found plenty of energy to run the Fellside Trail Run in Brampton the following day. The Middlesbrough run must have acted as a warm-up as they finished this race first girl and boy back. WHS was certainly well represented in the event – among others was Louise Ackerley (Year 7) who came in third in her age group, and Mrs Holliday who was second in the women’s category.
There’s no stopping Aoife! She has signed up to run 100 miles in February for Cancer Research UK, in support of family members and friends who have been affected by cancer. She is already 56 miles in, raising £370 so far. Fantastic Aoife – Well done!
