Year 8 Rugby
The Year 8 rugby team enjoyed two competitive fixtures last week, facing Central Academy on Tuesday and Caldew School on Thursday.
Tuesday vs Central Academy
For several of the boys, this was their very first experience of playing in a rugby fixture. Understandably, we were a little disorganised in the opening stages, but the team soon settled into the game and found a good rhythm. As confidence grew, the boys began rucking effectively and worked hard for each other across the pitch.
It was a closely contested and entertaining match, with both teams scoring some excellent tries and showcasing plenty of attacking rugby. Most pleasing was the way the players developed throughout the game, learning quickly and growing in confidence with every minute.
A big thank you to Central School for a fantastic game played in great spirit.
Thursday vs Caldew School
Just two days later, the same group of boys faced a strong Caldew School side. From the first whistle, they experienced what it is like to come up against powerful runners and a physical team.
Despite taking a few knocks along the way, the boys never stopped competing. They continually picked themselves up, showed tremendous determination, and grew stronger as the game progressed. Their resilience was evident as they dug deep, supported one another, and kept battling until the final whistle.
While the result was secondary, the character shown by the team was outstanding. The boys should be incredibly proud of the way they represented the school, finishing the game with their heads held high and a greater understanding of what it takes to succeed in rugby.
Thank you to Caldew School for making the journey across and providing another valuable and enjoyable fixture for our students.
Cross Country
A huge well done to all our students who represented William Howard School at the English Schools’ Cross Country Cup (Cumbria Round 1) at Frenchfield this week.
The commitment, determination and resilience shown by every runner was fantastic, with some outstanding individual and team performances during the day. Special congratulations to our Intermediate Girls’ team, who secured an excellent 2nd place overall, and to our Junior Girls’ team, who finished 5th, competing against some of the strongest schools in the county.
Our Junior Boys finished 7th and our Intermediate Boys finished 7th, demonstrating great effort and teamwork throughout the competition.
It was particularly pleasing to see so many students stepping up to represent the school, supporting one another and showing great enthusiasm. Well done to all involved and thank you to the event organisers QEGS.
