A Fantastic Start to the Hockey Season
After several match cancellations, WHS Junior and Inter hockey teams played their first matches of the season on Tuesday evening against QEGS.
The Junior team performed well, with good ball distribution, strong tackles and enthusiastic play. Good attacking play resulted in goals and at half time WHS were in the lead. Both teams’ confidence grew as the match commenced but WHS were the overall winners.
The Inter team showed strong individual skills, supportive play and good use of width. The first half saw several short corners for both teams, but at half time QEGS were in the lead. In the second half, WHS had more possession but unfortunately could not convert this into goals and QEGs were the overall winners.
Great play by both teams. Thanks to QEGS for their loan of players to match the teams even. Special mention to Stanley and Louise who were voted players’ player of the match.
Rugby Fixtures vs Central
A big well done to our Year 7 and Year 9 rugby teams following a fantastic afternoon of rugby against Central on Wednesday.
For our Year 7s, this was their first outing representing WHS, and they certainly rose to the challenge. Both teams showed real determination and commitment throughout, with the work we’ve been putting into rucking during training starting to shine through in match situations.
There were some excellent tries scored by both sides, making for an exciting and entertaining contest. Most importantly, the players demonstrated great teamwork, physicality and resilience against strong opposition.
A huge thank you to the staff and students at Central for, once again, providing a well-contested, competitive and physical game played in the right spirit. Well done to everyone involved!
Super 7s!
This week our Year 7 netball teams had their first opportunity to represent William Howard with a friendly fixture against Caldew and Ullswater. With this being our first fixture, we are still getting to grips with the roles and responsibilities of the different positions
Throughout the games, the girls grew in confidence with some lovely passing in the centre third and some fantastic defensive play and interceptions in the opposing teams circle. Our attacking players worked hard to get the ball into the William Howard shooting area, but at times we were unable to convert these opportunities into goals. Our green and red team were narrowly beaten, but our pink team secured an excellent draw against Caldew.
We have been so impressed with each players energy, enthusiasm and commitment and we cannot wait to see the progress we know they will make this year!
An extra special well done to Chantelle, Sumiya and Ellie, who were voted girls of the game!
Remember, Netball practice is on after school on a Wednesday 3.15pm-4.15pm. Everyone is welcome to attend!
