New Age Kurling
With the Winter Olympics just beginning, five of our students headed to Penrith for the County New Age Kurling finals on Friday.
The sports hall was buzzing with students from all over Cumbria. Primary and secondary school competitions were held alongside each other each with eight teams in each.
Our team played brilliantly despite having three new team members. They demonstrated excellent teamwork throughout. Blake captained the team and led well, discussing with each student where they should deliver their stones from and what shots they were going to take. All the students played some excellent shots contributing to the team’s scores.
The competition was played as a round robin, so our team had the opportunity to play seven matches in all. They won five and lost just two, coming away with the bronze medal. The defeats were to the teams who were placed first and second. Cartmel took the gold, winning all of their matches, and Newman took silver.
All the students who took part had a wonderful day. It was lovely to see their enthusiasm for this new sport.
Congratulation to Blake, Leo, Amos, Zayn and Bailey on achieving the bronze medal and representing the William Howard so well.
Thank you to Panathlon, Hannah Paling of HP Activities and Active Cumbria for organising the day and to the Sports Leaders from Whitehaven Academy who did a wonderful job of scoring. We hope that these kurling events will now become an annual fixture in Cumbria.
Netball
On Wednesday night, our Year 8 and Year 10 netball teams played a friendly fixture against Caldew School. Caldew started strongly in both matches; however William Howard grew in confidence in each quarter, resulting in two very evenly contested games. Some excellent and tight defending allowed William Howard to put pressure on Caldew throughout the game. William Howard demonstrated improved accuracy in our shooting and link up play during the latter stages of both matches. A big well done to everyone involved, a fantastic evening of Netball!
An extra well done to Tilly (Year 8), Jess (Year 10) and Tilly (10) who were voted players of the match by Caldew.
