Everyone embraced the chance to dress in their comfiest clothes or pyjamas today for a well-timed ‘Get Cosy and Read Day’.
After an atmospheric fireside story read by a Sixth Form student, Year 7 were excited to receive their Book Buzz books during a special reading event in the performance hall.
At breaktime, a Big Book Swap stall was open to browse, and Mrs Booker held a ‘Feed the Read’ Bake Sale. Then, at 2:45pm, some classes chose to “drop everything and read”, ending the busy week in a quiet relaxing way.
WHS Literacy Lead, Mrs Mallin-Cruddace, explained: “Get Cosy and Read Days are our school-wide special events that allow students to explore a broad range of ways to enjoy stories — from listening to audiobooks and sharing in live read-aloud sessions, to finishing the week with a calm and comfortable moment to relax with a book of their own choosing as students and staff ‘drop everything and read’.
Beyond the enjoyment they bring, these days also play an important role in promoting the value of reading. By giving students time, space, and varied experiences with books, we help nurture positive reading habits, build confidence, and highlight that reading can be both meaningful and enjoyable.
As we look ahead to the National Year of Reading in 2026, we are excited to continue building on this tradition. Future Get Cosy and Read days will remain a key feature of our literacy programme, offering students regular opportunities to celebrate the joy of reading, develop their imaginations, and discover new stories in engaging and inspiring ways.”
Congratulations to Year 8 student Grace who was announced as the winner of the Get Cosy and Read Day Creative Writing Competition!
