Powerful water safety messages were given to all our students today. Members of the Royal Lifesaving Society and Carlisle East Fire Station presented the special assemblies to remind everyone about the dangers of open water and what do you if they or their friends get into difficulty.
With this week’s record temperatures, the message is very timely. The lure of jumping into water to cool down is strong, but most young people don’t fully recognise the risks they’re taking. Cold water shock kills.
There is a heightened risk of drowning when air temperatures are higher, and teenagers (aged 13-17 years) and young adults are proportionately more likely to lose their lives.
The message is clear…
- Don’t enter water unsupervised. There may be potential hazards—too deep or too shallow, currents, tides, underwater objects.
- FLOAT TO LIVE. If you do get in difficulties – stay calm, tilt your head back and float on your back. Shout for help.
- If you see someone in trouble, call 999 and if possible, give your ‘what 3 words’ location.
- Never enter the water yourself to try and rescue someone. Throw something that floats.
