DIG DAY 1 | On Saturday 9 May, Miss Scullion, Mrs Giecco and a group of pupils from the Archaeology (Character Curriculum) course joined staff and volunteers for a day of digging at Carlisle Cricket Club.
This season ‘Uncovering Roman Carlisle’ are focusing on an area to the south of the monumental building. Our group spent the morning trowelling in the probable ‘temple precinct’ area and found sherds of Roman pottery, iron nails and animal bone. Congratulations to Josh who discovered the decorated end of a Roman bone hairpin in the afternoon!
DIG DAY 2 | On Saturday 16 May, a group of Year 10 History students completed a day of volunteering at the dig. The morning was spent ‘wet sieving’ soil from a Roman well to recover small fragments of bone and pottery. In the afternoon, the group trowelled an area close to the entrance of the Roman temple, uncovering iron nails, sherds of pottery and animal bone.
Well done to Eliza, who found part of a decorated copper alloy ring! Other notable Roman finds from the area included a ballista, the end of a bronze hairpin – both found by Mrs Giecco, and a beautifully enamelled brooch.
The dig runs until 30th May, with tours 6 days a week (not Sundays) – all are welcome to visit!
