Ten very excited students from Years 7 and 8 travelled to the Lake District for their long-awaited activity day with the Calvert Trust on Tuesday.
The wonderful staff at the centre gave our students a warm welcome and introduced the activities they would be doing before everyone headed to the sports hall to be fitted up for the first activity of the day – an assault course accessible for all.
With harnesses and helmets fitted, our students and staff climbed the steep hill to the course, working as a team to assist the students using wheelchairs to reach the top.
They took it in turns to be clipped on and navigate the course, crossing narrow bridges, balancing on a seesaw, going through a dark tunnel and negotiating wobbly paths. Our students threw themselves into the activity showing great enthusiasm and resilience. On their second time round, they were given the daring option of wearing a blindfold to complete the course, with another student to guide them. Several of the students took up this challenge and it was great to see them gaining confidence and building up their team working and leadership skills.
Not surprisingly, the students were all very hungry by lunchtime and welcomed the chance to go inside to warm up and eat.
Archery brought more excitement for the afternoon activity, with students having a go with a crossbow as well as an ordinary bow. They were all very resilient and didn’t give up if they missed. With a few goes, they all improved with many of them hitting the target.
The time flew and before they knew it, it was time to return to school. The minibuses were much quieter on the return journey – everyone was exhausted but happy!
Well done to John, Issac, Zayn, Leo, Nicky, Joshua, Ben, Amos, Mitsy and Fallyn. Our Learning Provision staff agreed they were a delight to be with:-“Their enthusiasm was infectious and they showed real kindness, providing support to each other throughout the day. They were a credit to the school!”
Thank you to the staff who supported and to the Calvert Trust for making this day possible. Everyone agreed that they would like to visit again!
