Our final featured alumni for 2024 is Callum Thurlbeck.
Callum’s career path has been shaped by a mix of academic achievements and hands-on experience in the aviation industry. After leaving William Howard School in 2012, Callum pursued his passion for aviation by enrolling at the Newcastle Aviation Academy. He then completed a BSc degree at Kingston University and earned an Aircraft Maintenance Licence, marking a solid foundation for his career in aviation.
Callum currently works for Jetstar Airways in Melbourne, Australia, where he plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and airworthiness of aircraft. His job involves certifying aircraft after maintenance, which requires a deep understanding of the mechanics and systems of aircraft. He finds fulfilment in problem-solving and applying his knowledge to tackle the challenges of aircraft maintenance.
Callum appreciated a variety of subjects in school, particularly Maths and PE, but he took his time to decide on his career path. He advises current students to research their options and explore the various routes into the aviation industry, including both degree programs and apprenticeships. For him, the university route worked best, but he acknowledges that different paths can lead to success in this field.
Callum’s story highlights the importance of patience, research, and the pursuit of relevant qualifications in carving out a successful career in aviation.
