Ryan Hetherington is our Alumnus of the Month for February. He left William Howard School in 2022 after completing his A-levels.
During his time at WHS, Ryan was presented with several opportunities to gain work experience and create relationships with local businesses. The Dream Placement scheme, managed by the Centre for Leadership Performance, gave him an opportunity to spend a week with Story Contracting. The placement sparked Ryan’s enjoyment of engineering and problem solving. As a result, he later applied for role with Story and secured a job as a Trainee Section Engineer. Ryan has now worked on numerous civil and housing sites, with a responsibility for the engineering aspect of projects (establishing heights, positions, quantities, etc) – The photo shows him using a Leica TS-16 Total Station, which is used to set out buildings and survey the land.
Ryan is currently enrolled on a Level 4 HNC Civil Engineering course at New College Durham, so one day a week he attends college. He plans to complete an HND after the HNC.
At WHS Ryan enjoyed many aspects of school, especially Business, History and Maths.
His advice to students is, “Keep your eyes open to all paths and take advantage of work experience and other opportunities that can arise in and out of school, because you never know what might interest you.”
