A group of Year 9 pupils from the Archaeology (Character Curriculum) class took part in the ‘Uncovering Roman Carlisle’ excavations at Carlisle Cricket Club on Saturday, 5th October. After a tour of the three trenches, they were put to work excavating a slot next to the Roman drain. The sun shone and our students discovered pieces of smashed Roman tile, a fragment of vaulting tube, iron nails and broken animal bones.
A second group helped with the excavations the following week. The students cleaned the remains of a foundation wall, removed a mortar floor surface and found a large amount of Roman tile. Despite a heavy downpour at lunch time we had a great day and managed to put some of the methodology and theory learned in the classroom into practice. Thanks also to Miss Scullion & Mr Campbell for helping out.
The current phase of excavations finishes on Saturday 19th October and site tours will run throughout the day (Monday to Saturday), visitors are always welcome. Star finds of his season’s dig include a finely carved sandstone head, complete ceramic vessels and a Medieval mirror case.
