On Friday, our table cricketers headed off to compete again. This time the destination was Penrith and the event, the County Finals. Our team were excited but nervous.
In this competition there were just six teams, the three winning teams from both the North and South Cumbria competitions held a few weeks earlier. This small number meant that there was time for every team to play each other.
Our first opponents were Cartmel. Our team played well but their nerves showed at times, and they lost this first match 242 runs to 245. Not a bad score though. Next up was Whinfell, the team who represented Cumbria last year at the National Finals at Lord’s. We knew they would be good! Our team picked themselves up from their loss and gave this match their all. The result was a tie – 221 runs each. The fielding from both teams was excellent which kept the batters scores low. Our final match before lunch was against Ullswater Community College. The team played confidently and won.
After a break for lunch the teams were straight back to it for their final two matches. Our next opponents were Trinity School. Our team played confidently again and came away with the win – 264 runs to 220. In their final match against Queen Elizabeth School, the team played the best they had played all day, each player scoring 6 after 6. The team scored the highest score they have ever done and won the match 319 runs to 220. A great way to end their day.
When the results were announced, the team were ecstatic! Despite losing a game, they tied for second place with Cartmel School and earned themselves a place in the North-East Regional Finals next month.
Congratulations to Lewis, Emily, Levi, Nicky, Summer, Samuel, Sarah and their captain, Andrew.
Thank you to Cumbria Cricket for organising another great table cricket competition and to the sports leaders who did a wonderful job of officiating.
