On Thursday last week twelve students from Years 7 and 8 headed to Carlisle to take part in the Cumbria School Games, a festival of sport for Years 4 to 8 from schools around the whole of Cumbria.
The event started with an opening ceremony at the Sheepmount Stadium where all the schools gathered together. Mike Zellar from Radio Cumbria led the opening and introduced David King, eight-time British national pair skating champion, who spoke about the importance of taking part in sport. This was followed by a mass warm up for the events of the day. Clare Paling of Active Cumbria led an aerobic workout to music which the students joined in with great enthusiasm.
Our students then headed to the Sands Centre for their events – Boccia and Cricket. They had a great morning playing 5 Boccia matches against other schools. Scores were recorded but not kept as the emphasis of the day was on taking part rather than competition. They all played well and worked well together in their teams.
In the afternoon, they played continuous cricket. All the students enjoyed this because they were constantly on the go. Everyone had plenty of opportunity to bat and there were some excellent fielding skills displayed.
At the end of the day, every student received a medal for taking part.
Congratulations to our students – Lewis, Bailey, George, Rebecca, Paige, Payton, Levi, Harry, Kayden, Ava, Summer and Emily. They threw yourselves into the activities and were great ambassadors for William Howard School.
Thank you, Active Cumbria for organising another great event, also to the Sports Leaders from Whitehaven who led the activities wonderfully.
