We were very pleased to welcome back Anna Nicholson – Paralympic shot put bronze medallist and former WHS student – last Monday to provide some inspiration and coaching for our current students.
Anna began by visiting a Year 7 PE class, where she gave an encouraging talk explaining how her journey in sport started when, like them, she was a WHS student, and how it led to her standing on the podium in Paris last year.
She showed the students different pieces of kit she uses for throwing, and dazzled them with her fabulous bronze medal (which actually contains a small piece of the Eiffel Tower). After demonstrating how to put the shot, all the students had a go themselves.
Anna then met with a group of Year 9 Sports Leaders for some shot put coaching. By the end of the session their technique had improved, and they were all ‘throwing’ well.
Two Year 7 students, who were representing the school in shot put the following day, also benefitted from Anna’s invaluable coaching in readiness for the competition.
During break time, Anna visited the Learning Provision Department where students were keen to meet her and hear about her sporting success. They were equally excited to see and hold her medal and the shot put she won bronze with.
Finally, Anna attended a BTEC PE class. The students were about to learn about training programmes for athletes and Anna was able to share her training programme with them.
A big thank you to Anna for coming into school and working with our students. We wish her the best of luck for the future and will continue to eagerly follow her sporting career.
