Miss Carruthers Reports on Thursday evening’s matches with Caldew School:
Year 7
Once again, the girls did not disappoint in their effort and resilience. They are learning to play together as a team, understanding each other’s role on the court, and in every game progress is evident. Still work to do though and some hard evenings of training ahead. What a privilege to take such a lovely group of students, they make me proud!
Team: Ruby Hewson (C), Emily Potter, Phoenix Barker, Lexie Sherlock, Everlynne Mowbray, Ellie Vance, Jessie Dalby and Lauren McLaughlin
Players’ player (nominated by the opposition): Ruby Hewson and Emily Potter
Year 10
It was another nail-biting match for one of the Year 10 teams. Last time we played Cladew they took the win by one goal, fuelling our determination going into this match. This time it was our turn!
It was goal for goal for a lot of the game. By the end of the first quarter, we were leading 5-3; second quarter we held on 11-9, but we were shooting against the wind making some of the easier, close-up shots difficult. At the end of the third quarter Caldew had pulled it back, they made some substitutions within their defence putting our attack under increasing pressure, it was 15 -15 and feeling very tense. WHS kept their cool and some lovely defensive interceptions overturned the opposition’s C pass. Final Score: WHS 19 / Caldew 18. Well deserved!
Team: Izzy Milligan, Hope O’Connor (C), Amy Gray, Izzy Matthews, Beth Johnston, Carmen Fell and Maddy Reed.
Players’ player (nominated by the opposition): Maddy Reed
Our second Year 10 team played a brilliant game too. I say Year 10 but a couple of players were unable to play last minute, so three of our Year 8 team stepped up to take their place.
The team put on a solid performance, at the end of the first quarter it was 3-3. Caldew pulled away in the second quarter due to some silly errors made by us, which left us trailing by two goals. In the third quarter, WHS settled well into the game with solid passing, moving onto the ball and supporting each other meaning that they out played the opposition, trailing only by one goal, the game was there for the taking. In the final quarter the girls started to panic, they knew how close they were. The game could have gone either way but this time, it went theirs. Final score: WHS 10 – Caldew 13
