On Tuesday morning, members of the Cumbria Deaf Association in Carlisle visited William Howard School for a morning of inclusive sport with our members of Team Inspire.
Our students welcomed them to our sports hall and introduced themselves one by one, some of them having learnt to sign their names for the event which was much appreciated. Our guests then introduced themselves using signing. Debbie, their lead, acted as interpreter throughout the morning.
The students and guests began by playing multiple friendly games of Boccia which were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Those who weren’t playing refereed and did a great job.
During a short refreshment break together, they enjoyed a chat with the help of Debbie.
Our students then introduced the guests to two games that were new to them – Table Cricket and New Age Kurling. They enjoyed both but Kurling was the biggest hit, and the group is now thinking about buying their own set.
WHS Inclusive Sports Leader, Mrs Croucher, said: “It was lovely observing how well our students engaged with the guests through the medium of inclusive sports.”
When asked at the end of the session if they had enjoyed their morning and would like to do it again, our guests’ answer was a resounding ‘yes!’. They also said that our students would be welcome to visit them and play at their venue in Carlisle.
Thank you everyone who attended from the Deaf Association. We look forward to meeting you again.
