Year 7 Football
Our Year 7 football team put in a great performance last week vs Ullswater in the County Cup. They battled well and stayed in the game thanks to a hat trick from Finn McDerby. Despite adding a fourth from a Bodhi Forster penalty, Ullswater won the game 6-4. Well Done to all Year 7 students who have trained this term – more games to come after Christmas!
New Age Kurling
On Tuesday, a team of four William Howard students attended the first ever New Age Kurling Competition to be held in Cumbria.
New Age Kurling is a team sport adapted from the sport of curling to be fully inclusive for all young people. Between two and four players on opposing teams compete in a tactical game which involves sliding weighted stones towards a circular target.
On arrival, the sports hall at Richard Rose Central Academy was already buzzing with teams of students practising their Kurling skills on court. Our students quickly joined them.
The competition got underway at 10 o’clock with 15 teams from the North of Cumbria competing for a place in the county finals in February.
There were four teams in our pool. Our team lost their first match by 2 points but went on to win their next two matches earning themselves a place in the semi-finals. They lost their semi-final by one point but then went on to win their third-fourth play off match and so came away with the bronze medal and a place in the County competition in February.
Congratulation to Leo, Amos, Emily and Amy. Their confidence grew as they progressed through the competition, and they all played some excellent shots in their final match.
Thank you to Karen Cook, the School Games Organiser for Carlisle and Nathan Maguire, World Para Athletics Champion in wheelchair racing, for organising the day. Thank you also to all the Sports Leaders who refereed the matches.
The team are looking forward to competing again in February.
Netball
Over 50 students from all year groups participated in our annual festive netball tournament after school on Wednesday. It was a brilliant way to end what has been a fantastic term of Netball! The commitment and enthusiasm shown from pupils in year 7, all the way up to year 11 has been exceptional. We cannot wait to continue working with these teams in the new year!
