Year 9 & 10 Rounders – WHS vs Caldew School
It was a perfect evening on Friday, 9th May for the first rounders fixture of the season, with the sun shining down on an eager and enthusiastic Year 9 and 10 squad.
Despite Year 10s losing the coin toss, so batting first (not the ideal start, as it’s always useful to know the target) our girls settled quickly into the game. They battled with confidence, finding gaps and striking well, though at times played a little cautiously, missing out on potential half-rounders.
In the field, the team pulled together despite some early overthrows likely caused by nerves. As the innings progressed, communication improved, and the team steadied. After a tight first innings, the score stood at WHS 5.5 – Caldew 5.
The second innings proved just as competitive. WHS struggled to find the same rhythm with the bat, with Caldew’s strong fielding limiting opportunities to score full rounders. The team worked hard, accumulating valuable half-rounders where possible.
Defensively, WHS held their ground and managed to protect their lead in a close finish. Final score Year 10: WHS 11.5 – Caldew 10.5
A brilliant effort from all players in a closely contested and thoroughly enjoyable match! Well done, everyone!
The Year 9 rounders team were also first up to bat in their match. Although they were making some excellent contact with the ball, they failed to find many gaps in the Caldew fielding set up. Despite some excellent hitting, especially from Ameera, they were only able to score a number of half rounders.
With only one practice before the fixture, they were slightly underprepared going into field and this showed, being slow to pick up some loose balls and make quick decisions. Caldew capitalised on this, with the score at the end of the first innings WHS 3.5 – Caldew 7.5.
During the second innings, Caldew’s fielding skills were outstanding, with a number of our players being stumped out in quick succession. However, they showed excellent resilience continuing to make good contact with the ball and running quickly between the posts.
During Caldew’s second innings our fielding skills really improved, fielding the ball in quickly to get their players out. Some excellent long throws from Ameera in the deep field put the oppositions under pressure, however Caldew’s batting was especially strong, and the match ended in defeat for WHS.
Despite it being a difficult start to this year’s rounders games we are very proud of the Year 9 girls and the respect and resilience they showed. There are lots of positives to take from the game and things we can improve on!
Year 9 Cricket
Nine, Year 8 girls were lucky enough to take part in a cricket festival organised and run by Carlisle Cricket Club on Thursday, 8th May. A total of 9 local schools attended the skills development and cricket tournament day.
The morning, saw the girls take part in a carousel of activities, developing their skills in bowling, batting, fielding, and games play. The afternoon was then a cricket tournament, where schools competed against each other, in a total of 3 games.
Each game consisted of 12 overs and saw each student bowl individually and bat in pairs. WHS students utilised the skills learnt in the morning and progressed in ability game by game.
Their first game was a loss to Nelson Thomlinson; their second, a narrow defeat to Austin Friars; then finally, a win against Newman College.
Mrs Henderson remarked: “Great attitude was shown by all participants. They were a credit to themselves and WHS. Well done to all involved.”
