Year 8 Rock Detectives (part of our Character Curriculum) have been exploring how fossils can tell us about the environments of the past. They created intricate trilobite models using rope to better understand their adaptations.
Trilobite fossils are found all over the world. They are a group of extinct marine creatures that first appeared around 521 million years ago but became extinct about 251 million years ago – killed by the end Permian mass extinction event that removed over 90% of all species on Earth. Like many invertebrate animals living today, including crustaceans, spiders and insects, trilobites were arthropods. Some swam in open water, while others crawled over the sea floor or burrowed in sediment.
