It was the turn for our U15 Netball teams to play in their City Tournament against other Carlisle Schools (Austin Friars, Caldew, Trinity, RRMA, and Newman), on Thursday (14 March). The competition was a round-robin, which means all teams play each other. The wet conditions made each game challenging; the ball was slippery and the surface even more so. Successful landings were difficult and the game had to be played much slower than we are used to.
Game 1 – Caldew
This is always a tough game, it can go either way on the day as both teams are very evenly matched. Caldew were winning 3-1 at half time, our aim to pull it to a draw. We scored two goals quickly in the second half and we knew, despite it being short timings that we had a chance to win. We did just that – WHS 5 Caldew 3.
Game 2 – Trinity
The team struggled in this game, despite getting the ball to the attacking D we struggled to score. Trinity had a strong defence and out pressured our attacking players, marking them out of the game at times. We lost this match, but it should never have been the final score that it was. Trinity 4 WHS 0
Game 3 – Newman School
The team settled well into this game and the shooters were back on scoring form. Despite taking an early lead we continued to just try and score as many as we could in case final positions came down to number of goals scored. WHS 11 Newman 0
Game 4 – Austin Friars
A great game of netball, two evenly matched teams in many ways, Friars took the first goal and we quickly equalised, it went goal for goal for very much of the game. An exciting match which finished WHS 6 Austin Friars 6
Overall tournament position – Second place.
Our second team also played each of the Carlisle schools in the same tournament. As the tournament progressed they got better and better, and had some close games near the end of the tournament. The weather at the beginning made some matches difficult and it took a while for the team to relax and settle into their games and play together.
Players: Hope O’Connor (C), Izzy Milligan, Amy Gray, Beth Johnston, Tallulah Brough, Izzy Matthews, Heilani Acton, Maddie Reed, Carmen Fell, Bella Richardson, Zaara Nasif, Maddy Grierson, Poppy Harrison, Lydia Sabuda and Anna Canning.
Their coach, Miss Carruthers said: “This group of girls are an absolute delight; it is always a pleasure taking them to fixtures. I cannot wait to take them to Holland on our Sports Tour during the Easter holiday. Well done everyone in the difficult conditions.”
