Carlisle School’s Cross Country
Students from Years 8, 9 and 10 took part in the Carlisle Schools Cross Country at the Sheepmount on Wednesday afternoon. Despite the freezing weather conditions, the runners put on a fantastic performance on the flat course.
First up to race were the Junior Girls – a team of seven from Year 8 and 9. They all ran brilliantly with Elena taking the lead early on, Aoife close behind and Daisy chasing them both.
Next up was the Junior Boys race. The boys ran well with three finishing in the top ten and a fantastic demonstration of sportsmanship from Elliot.
Our competitors for the Inters race were from Year 10. In the girls’ race, all seven put on a great performance fighting hard in the cold conditions with some new runners taking up the opportunity to race. The final race of the day was the Inter Boys race with the boys putting on a great performance with some even having the energy for a sprint finish at the end!
Overall, the William Howard team performed brilliantly with 18 out of 22 runners qualifying to represent the Carlisle District as the Cumbria Schools Cross Country Championships in January to be held in Keswick.

Year 9 Sports Leaders
Our Year 9 Sports Leaders have been busy this week, helping at two primary PE events.
On Wednesday, a number of them took on umpiring, time keeping and scoring roles for our cluster schools netball competition. We welcomed seven schools from the local area, with Warwick Bridge winning the large schools’ tournament and Brampton B, the small schools event.
Then on Friday morning, 14 leaders went to a very cold Talkin Tarn to assist with the primary cross-country event.
PE Teacher, Mrs Holliday said, “It’s great to see the leaders becoming more confident when taking on different roles and responsibilities!”
U14 Netball
One of our U14 netball teams took part in the County Netball Tournament at Sedbergh yesterday. This is a notoriously tough tournament with all teams playing to a high level, so we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy day. We received the draw a few days prior – we were to face some well-drilled teams, such as Kirby Stephen Grammar School, who historically do very well.
Our squad were motivated and in good spirits, supporting each other and setting themselves an individual target to build on game by game. The experience of watching England Vitality on Saturday could not have been better timed, the inspiration and determination shone through our players as the games commenced.
The squad played four games, losing the first two against Kirby Stephen and Ulverston. We knew we had a difficult job on our hands, but spirits were still high and once the nerves had disappeared, we came back in true fighting spirit, learning from the experiences of the first two games. The third match was against Kirby Kendal, this was a close match and evenly matched. Unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalise on our shooting chances and in the final 30 seconds Kirby Kendal scored, taking the win 3-2.
The final match was against Cockermouth, again this was a close game, the squad showed some excellent movement on and off the ball. The defensive duo made some excellent interceptions limiting Cockermouth’s shooting chances. Final whistle 3-3.
Miss Carruthers said: “It was a brilliant opportunity, and the team did fantastic against some tough opposition. I am immensely proud of each and every one of them!”
