Six teams from Cumbria met to compete in the Lord’s Taverners County Table Cricket Finals in Penrith on Wednesday. The competition was played as a round robin with all teams playing each other once and places being decided on the number of wins and losses for each team.
Our players were both excited and nervous on arrival, but nerves soon vanished when they headed over to a table to warm up.
Our first match was against Cartmel. Both teams fielded well, keeping the scores low, but William Howard came out on top. In the next match against Ulverston High School, our team fielded superbly and were on fire with their batting, scoring 6 after 6. Our final match of the morning was against Cockermouth. Again, our team batted superbly and fielded well, once again winning the game.
Two matches were left to play in the afternoon. Tiredness was beginning to show but our students admirably supported each other and kept up their winning streak against Dowdales. The final match was with Central Academy and was very closely fought – William Howard won by just three runs.
Having won all their matches, our William Howard team became County Champions. Cartmel came 2nd and Central Academy 3rd. These three teams will now go on to represent Cumbria in the North-East Regional Competition in Durham in March.
Well done to all the teams who took part. Every year the competition becomes fiercer as more schools take up the sport and there were some fantastic bowling, fielding and batting skills on display.
Congratulations to our William Howard team on their success – Nicky (Captain), Samuel (vice- captain) Eve, Summer, Harry, Levi, Emily, Amy and Lewis. Their extra practices after school each week really paid off. They demonstrated excellent teamwork throughout the day. They were over the moon when they won the competition and were awarded the trophy.
Thank you to Hannah Paling and John Hughes from Cumbria Cricket for organising and running the day and thank you also to the young leaders from Central Academy who did a great job umpiring.
