It was typical Cumbrian weather for the English Schools Cross Country Cup Competition at Hunter Hall School in Penrith on Wednesday 16th October. However, the torrential rain didn’t seem to bother the four William Howard Cross country teams who demonstrated excellent grit and determination on some testing terrain. The four different courses took runners up two very steep hills, through a number of undulating fields and then through a water feature!
The competition was tough, but the WHS runners put on some excellent individual performances which then contributed to their team’s overall position. The junior boys finished 6th, junior girls 4th, intermediate boys 7th and intermediate girls 6th.
A special mention must go to Daisy Ballantyne and Louise Ackerley in the junior girls team who both finished within the top ten. A fantastic afternoon, well done to all!
A huge well done also to the Year 7 boys and girls who took part in the Cumbria Schools Cross Country event the following Friday at Frenchfield in Penrith. The course was a tough one, it certainly challenged the legs in places with some hard climbs. A solid performance and brilliant effort was given by all runners.
Individual placing is not yet known; however, we do know that Louise Ackerley has been selected to compete in the Midlands XC in Dudley in November – an outstanding achievement.
A huge well done to the following runners: Louise Ackerley, Scarlett Bendle, Rosie Dobson, Charlotte Hore, Caoimhe McAlister, Mia Presch, Archie Dodd, Mac Hogg, Saul Mair, Joel Nettleton and Frankie Todd.
A big shout out also goes to Mac’s mum for fuelling and refuelling our team with homemade cookies, much appreciated, thank you!
