Our Year 9 Outdoor Learning group had a memorable experience this week as they visited the Keswick Mountain Rescue Base to learn first-hand what it takes to search for and rescue people in the outdoors.
The team at Keswick Mountain Rescue welcomed students with a tour of their impressive base, showcasing the specialist equipment and advanced technology used during callouts. Students explored the control room, discovered how rescue missions are coordinated, and saw the communication tools that help teams operate safely in the fells.
A highlight of the visit was the chance to handle some of the medical kit used during real rescues. Students were fascinated by the equipment and listened intently as team members shared gripping stories of past missions, tales of bravery, quick thinking, and true teamwork on the mountains.
Following the visit, the group braved the Cumbrian weather for a walk along part of the Derwentwater shoreline. Despite the conditions, spirits were high as they soaked in the stunning views while learning more about how to prepare for outdoor adventures, from suitable clothing to route planning and safety essentials.
The experience offered students both inspiration and practical knowledge, reinforcing the importance of respect, responsibility, and readiness when exploring the outdoors. A huge thank you to Keswick Mountain Rescue for giving our students such a memorable and meaningful experience.
