Seven pupils from the Year 8 and 9 Archaeology (Character Curriculum) course joined Mrs Giecco and Miss Scullion for an interesting ‘archaeological field walk’ last Saturday.
Field walks take place on ploughed/tilled field as the machinery often brings buried archaeological artefacts to the surface. A series of 30m x 30m grid squares were laid out and numbered and with students lined up every 2m, each square was ‘walked’, with keen-eyed pupils retrieving any surface finds.
The field walk took place in an area of archaeological significance between the Roman fort at Brampton Old Church and the Stanegate Roman Road, and a total of 12 squares were scanned. The group found agricultural iron work (pieces of horseshoes and chain), fragments of Victorian glass bottles, pottery dating from the 17th – early 20th century, and 3 sherds of earlier medieval pottery (Shards = glass, sherds = pottery). Pupils will be invited to wash and analyse the finds during a break time this week.
Many thanks to David Brough, farmer at Old Church Farm for permitting us to run the activity on his land.
