This week’s Headteacher’s Award is presented to Jim Hodgson in Year 12.
Our Sixth Form students never fail to impress us with the imagination and ambition they bring to their Extended Project Qualifications. Among this year’s outstanding projects, one that has particularly captured our admiration is Jim’s intricate LEGO model of NHS Dumfries and Galloway’s children’s ward and operating theatre.
Designed to help young patients understand what to expect before surgery, the model aims to ease anxiety and offer reassurance at a daunting moment in their lives.
From the outset of the EPQ course, Jim knew he wanted to create something in LEGO and to master Studio 2.0, the digital design software used by professional LEGO designers. A family connection with Lyn Durrant, General Manager for Women and Children’s Services at NHS Dumfries and Galloway, inspired him to channel his skills into a project that would genuinely support children in hospital.
Jim’s model features the preparation room, operating theatre, recovery room, ward and even the canteen. It showcases not only remarkable creativity and technical expertise but also deep empathy and consideration for others.
Jim is an exceptional and thoroughly deserving recipient of the Headteacher’s Award. Not only is he an innovative young genius, but just as importantly, he is unfailingly polite, kind and exceptionally pleasant to everyone around him. He has always been an outstanding student at WHS and has grown into an exceptional young man.
Jim epitomises our school values of respect, responsibility and resilience, and he is an inspiration and an outstanding role model to younger students. We are delighted to recognise his achievements with this award.
