Year 9 Football
Our Year 9 boys football team have had quite the week!
On Monday, they had an away trip in the county cups against Appleby Grammar School. The trip down the M6 saw the boys play their first fixture of Year 9 and they overcame their competition in an excellent display of teamwork. With some high-quality goals and flashes of individual excellence, the boys progressed to the next round where they will play RR Central or Trinity.
Then on Wednesday, the boys took on Emmanuel College from Gateshead in the ESFA Cup. Following a tense and nervy opening 10 minutes, the boys found their rhythm. Another quality performance with special mentions for their individual performances from D. Nasif, R. Williamson and C. Hickman saw the boys run out 6-2 winners. Goals from Hickman x2, Nettleton x2, Mair and Hopper sealed the win. We look forwards to the draw for the next round, early next week.
Year 10 Football – County Cup First Round: WHS 3–1 QKS
WHS secured a hard-fought victory over The Queen Katherine School, Kendal, with talented Year 10 students stepping up to support the squad following several injuries.
A physical midfield battle saw Lewis E break the deadlock with a bullet header, before Jayden N doubled the lead with a skilful run and calm finish. Lewis added his second after the break, striking a precise free kick from the edge of the box to make it 3–0.
QKS responded with relentless pressure and numerous shots on target, pulling a goal back to set up a tense finish. WHS held firm to secure their place in the next round.
Well done to both teams for an exciting contest. Credit to QKS—the scoreline did not reflect how closely contested the game was.
A special thank you to our friends at Warwick Wanderers Football Club and Nick Stobbs for allowing us to use their pitches at such short notice!
U13 Girls Football
Our U13 Girls participated in the City Football Tournament at the Sheepmount in Carlisle on Monday evening.
Eleven girls represented the school and all showed fantastic determination throughout the tournament.
In the first game they narrowly missed out to Caldew by 1 goal, and in the second game came out with a draw against Newman. This put them in the semifinal against Trinity where they were beaten to a place in the final.
It was a great evening of football! Well done to everyone who played, especially those representing the school for the first time.
Girls football practice continues after school on a Tuesday (3.15-4.15pm) for all year groups, come along and join the fun!
Sports Leaders Run Primary Netball Tournament
This week some of our Sports Leadership students had another opportunity to test their umpiring and officiating skills at the annual primary netball competition.
Our Year 9 netball leaders officiated all the matches, demonstrating an excellent understanding of the rules. It was great to also see them supporting our primary students to understand the game further.
Our Sixth Form Level 3 Sports Leaders ran the whole tournament. They acted as timekeepers and match organisers as well as being responsible for inputting all the scores and calculating the results.
It was fantastic to see so many students applying their leadership skills in a competitive context, and as always is great to see our primary schools!
