Our Year 9 archaeologists delved into the past in a surprising way on Tuesday during their Character Curriculum lesson with Miss Scullion and Mrs Giecco.
The class examined (fake) coprolites – the term used for fossilized or desiccated poo – to determine what people had eaten, and to work out which time period they belonged to – Roman, Viking or Tudor. Using inclusions such as olive stones, sesame, wheat, apple and orange seeds, as well as fish and chicken bones and small stones, the group did some detective work to analyse their finds and correctly identify the coprolites.
This activity is part of the Environmental Archaeology course which covers a range of fieldwork methods, including recording and historical map reading. It also looks at different branches of archaeology that the students might be inspired to study when they are older.
