A big thank you for all the generous donations we have received so far for our Comic Relief appeal (particular mention goes to Lambert-Gill Ltd).
An incredible 33-strong team of staff are taking on an Ironman triathlon challenge on Saturday, 22 March to raise funds for the charity. They will work together across three disciplines: a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile marathon run, in three distinct teams tackling each leg of the race.
In the build-up to our staff Ironman challenge, students have been running our ‘laal loop’ in their PE lessons this week. With 27 classes, each near-mile loop will collectively cover the 26.2-mile marathon distance. Today the weather was perfect, and many students were keen to complete the lap multiple times!
A big shout out to Louise who set a new Year 7 record of 6 minutes and 31 seconds. (Earlier this year, Louise was selected to represent Cumbria at the Northern Counties Cross Countries Championships.)

Headteacher Kath Pigdon said: “I am excited to take part in a 112-mile bike ride for Comic Relief as part of our school staff iron man challenge team. This challenge is not only an opportunity to support those in need but it’s about coming together with colleagues, building team spirit, and showing our students the power of resilience and teamwork. Every mile we ride brings us closer to making a difference, and I’m proud to be part of this effort.”
Site Assistant Ian Spriggs, who is leading the runners, said: “As a regular marathon/ultra runner I was more than pleased to take on this challenge. Even more pleased that lots of staff will be joining me on the run. We will have a range of abilities on the day with staff members running various distances. We hope the day and the run will be lots of fun while raising funds for a great cause.”
English teacher and Director of Learning for Year 10, Sarah Ledger will be leading the swimming. She commented: “Over the last few years I’ve really enjoyed wild swimming with colleagues. Although we are not able to swim outdoors on this occasion, it will be great to get a team of swimmers together for such a worthy cause. Swimming is a great exercise particularly if cycling and running is challenging – it takes stress off joints but provides a great cardio workout. This Ironman Challenge allows the biggest number of staff to work to their strengths.”
