A group of William Howard students from Years 7, 8 and 13 took part in the ‘Uncovering Roman Carlisle’ excavations at Carlisle Cricket Club on Saturday. One group of students excavated a Roman midden (rubbish) layer in the southern part of the site, uncovering pieces of pottery, glass and animal bone. The other group had the tougher job of removing rubble to reveal a series of pilae (tile stacks forming part of the underfloor heating system). A big ‘well done’ to all involved – our pupils asked lots of questions, gained fieldwork experience and watched a bit of Cricket at lunch time.
The current phase of excavations finishes on Saturday 15th June and site tours will run throughout the day if you would like to learn more; the star finds so far are two complete Roman beakers, hair pins, brooches, beads and lead seals.
