Double congratulations go to father and son team, Mr Skelton and Rufus, who ran the Great North Run yesterday, each raising over £500 for their chosen charities.
English teacher, Tony Skelton was fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Society while his son, Sixth Form student, Rufus ran for Macmillan Cancer Support. Both causes being close to them as family members have been affected by the illnesses.
Mr Skelton said: “I’d ran the Great North Run a few times over ten years ago, but it was good to do it again with Rufus. It almost felt like a rite of passage for Rufus as many of the ‘Skelton boys’ have run it in the past”.
Rufus ran just 8 seconds outside of 2 hours and Mr Skelton followed with a time of 2 hours and 28 minutes.
Rufus commented: “It was a really good atmosphere. Although it felt a little tense at the start, the crowds and bands playing along the way provided lots of support”.
Mr Skelton and Rufus started running Parkrun together, encouraging each other every week.
Rufus added, “We’re hoping to carry on and complete another half marathon next month – the Great Cumbrian Run.”
